the partridge family school bus

at 4:30 this afternoon, i was ready to go home. i had been looking at calendars all day and i find anything even remotely related to numbers exhausting. i was winding down when i got a call from a mother of students in our ministry. her nephew from cape coral is a youth pastor. his church was doing a ministry tour around the area. on the way to a church in ft. pierce, their large, colorful partridge family-esque school bus broke down on the turnpike in boca. bummer.

so, the call i received at 4:30 was a call for help for the little partridges. i have to be honest, i was a bit annoyed. i had worked hard all day and just wanted to go home. is that so wrong? as i began to talk with the mom to figure out some options to help them out, i began calling people i knew, calling in favors to bus companies and pulling my resources i realized something. how self-centered i am. i am totally blessed to have a great job at a great church with lots of resources at my fingertips. a group of students taking their summer to travel and do ministry were sitting captive in the blistering heat in a raggedy old school bus on the turnpike. i was sitting in my nice, quiet office wanting to spend a night alone. for some reason that seemed more important than helping my brothers and sisters. all the kids and their great leaders are sleeping at the church tonight on the floor without a grumble or complaint. away from home and way off schedule. God works in such interesting ways. i am sure that this experience stretched and tested both their leaders and students. i know that i learned (well…more reminded of) something.

lesson of the day? don’t be so daggum selfish. treat others as you would want to be treated. and be jesus to complete strangers.
