Top Ten South Floridian Summer Secrets

Saturday, while enjoying many of the Top Ten South Floridian Summer Secrets, fellow blogger Amy (whom I’ve also been fortunate to meet in real life) and I dreamt up something new to help spice up the blogging world. We call it the “two-part blog” or “tag-team blog” or “I’m-too-lazy-to-write-the-entire-blog-blog.”

Let’s begin…

10. Leave your flip-flops out of the sun. Being South Floridians flips are a part of our everyday attire. We wear them all over South Florida, especially to the beach and to the pool! Burnt feet are no fun, trust us. In order to avoid this unpleasant feeling, simply turn them over to avoid any sun exposure whatsoever. You can also put them under your towel or your t-shirt or mesh tank top. Whatever works.

9. Indoor/outdoor sun amplifier. OK…we like to be tan, that’s not so bad, is it? Living here in SoFlo, a tan is the must-have accessory. Fair skin is kind of like a scarlet letter. Sun amplifier will help to ward off any unsightly pale skin. As a warning, we do not recommend this if you do not have a good base coat tan. You should make sure you have some color before you go with this tip. The amplifier will help to maximize your skin’s sun absorption. You’ll get lots of color really fast. It makes us happy.

8. Ditch the sunglasses. We know the sun is bright, but come on people. It’s time to grow up. When you wear sunglasses in the sun for extended periods of time, you get what we not so affectionately call “‘coon eyes.”  It’s not a good look for you, trust us. If you insist on sunglasses, wear a hat too so that your face doesn’t get too much sun as to make your coon eyes more visible. Definitely don’t apply sun amplifier to your face if you are a sunglasses person…please.

7. Tend to your sunburn. If you’ve spent too much time in the sun, you will be plagued by the nasty fire-breathing monster we call a sunburn. Should you fall prey to this dirty bugger, we have a few tips that might help you. First of all, go ahead and take your shower, the sting will only get worse. Next apply a healthy a layer of aloe vera. Continue to apply aloe or moisturizing lotion. You might also want to pop a couple of Tylenol or Asprin. This will help reduce the sting. Lastly, make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Too much sun will dry ya out!

6. Double towels. As we were dreaming up this blogging adventure, I was lounging comfortably on my double-toweled pool chair. Here’s the deal, the sun make things hot, ya dig? It is an unpleasant and usually unfruitful battle with scolding hot metal chair arms that have been roasting in the South Florida heat all day. What can you do? Double towels! First lay one towel horizontally on the chair so that it covers both arms. Then, lay your second towel long ways. Simple, right? You can also use the plethora of towels to wipe off the “sweat” of your frozen water bottle.
